Common problems with central air conditioning not providing heating
Central air conditioning systems failing to provide heating in winter, exhibiting poor heating performance, or not producing hot air are common malfunctions during daily use. The problems mainly fall into four categories: operational settings errors, equipment malfunctions, abnormal piping environments, and system operating limitations. Most minor issues can be troubleshooted independently, while hardware failures require professional repair. Specific common problems are as follows:
I. Operation and Settings Issues (Most Common, Easily Solved by Yourself)
Most central air conditioning systems that fail to provide heating are not due to equipment malfunction, but rather to improper use and settings, which is the first step for users to troubleshoot.
1. Incorrect mode selection : The device is not switched to heating mode, and is in cooling, ventilation, dehumidification or automatic mode. In low temperature environments, automatic mode will prioritize ventilation and will not start the heating function. Some models require manual activation of "heating/floor heating mode" in winter. Mixed-type central air conditioners will also not have hot air if the cooling and heating modes are not switched.
2. Temperature setting too low : If the set temperature is lower than the actual indoor temperature, the air conditioning heating system will not start. For winter heating, the temperature should be set between 22℃ and 26℃, ensuring the set temperature is at least 3℃ higher than the room temperature for the equipment to heat properly.
3. Improper fan speed and air outlet settings : When heating, hot air has a lower density and rises. If the central air conditioning air outlet is horizontal or pointed upwards, hot air will accumulate above the ceiling, leaving the lower floors of the room without warmth. Simultaneously, when the fan speed is set to the lowest or silent setting, the hot air circulation is slow, which can mislead people into thinking that heating is not working. In addition, some models will activate their anti-cold air protection during the initial heating phase, resulting in no airflow for 1-3 minutes after startup. This is normal and not a malfunction.
4. Interference from timed/sleep modes : If the timed shutdown, timed hibernation, or night sleep mode is accidentally activated, the device will shut down prematurely or operate at reduced power, resulting in heating interruption and weak heating.
II. Equipment malfunctions (require simple self-check or professional repair)
After ruling out settings issues, it is highly likely that there is a malfunction in the indoor and outdoor units, causing the heating function to fail.
1. Indoor unit filter clogging : If the filter is not cleaned for a long time, a lot of dust and lint will accumulate, clogging the air inlet and outlet, obstructing air circulation, and preventing the heating heat from being blown out normally. This will manifest as weak airflow and weak hot air. Long-term clogging will also trigger the equipment overload protection and directly stop heating.
2. Outdoor unit failure and shutdown : The heating function of a central air conditioning system relies on the heat exchange of the outdoor unit. Damage to the outdoor unit fan, compressor failure, or aging of the starting capacitor will cause the outdoor unit to stop working and the whole unit to be unable to heat. In low-temperature winter environments, if the outdoor unit accumulates too much frost or ice and fails to defrost in time, it will occupy the heating mode, resulting in intermittent heating failure or intermittent heating.
3. Electric auxiliary heating not started (fan coil unit) : Most fan coil central air conditioning units have electric auxiliary heating function. In low temperature weather, the heating efficiency of a heat pump alone is extremely low. If the electric auxiliary heating element is damaged, the circuit is faulty, or the electric auxiliary heating switch is not turned on, the heating temperature will not meet the standard and there will be almost no warm air.
4. Sensor malfunction : If the indoor temperature sensor or pipe temperature sensor is faulty or misaligned, it will send incorrect temperature signals to the main board, causing the system to misjudge that the room temperature has reached the standard and prematurely shut down the heating function, resulting in the air conditioner running but not providing heating.
III. Piping and System Operating Condition Issues (Common in Water-cooled Central Air Conditioning Systems)
Compared to refrigerant-based systems, pipework problems are the main cause of heating failures in water-based central air conditioning systems, and are also common malfunctions in commercial and residential ceiling-mounted water-cooled systems.
1. Air blockage in pipes : When heating is turned on for the first time in winter, a large amount of air accumulates inside the water pipes, forming an air blockage. This causes water circulation to stagnate, and hot water cannot be delivered to the indoor fan coil units. The equipment operates normally but has no heating effect, which often manifests as some rooms being warm and others not being warm.
2. Abnormal water pressure : Low water pressure in the water system (below the standard working water pressure) results in insufficient water circulation power; excessive water pressure triggers the pressure relief protection, both of which can cause the heating system to malfunction, resulting in problems such as no heating or slow heating.
3. Clogged pipe filter : Mud, rust, and impurities in the water pipes clog the Y-type filter, hindering hot water circulation, causing a sharp drop in the overall heating efficiency, and in severe cases, stopping the heating altogether.
4. Insufficient antifreeze in the main unit : In low-temperature environments, if the antifreeze ratio of the water chiller system is insufficient or completely depleted, the pipes will freeze and the heat exchange will fail, which will not only prevent heating but may also cause the pipes to freeze and crack.
IV. Environmental and Objective Limitations
1. Outdoor temperature is too low and exceeds the equipment's operating conditions : Ordinary heat pump central air conditioners have operating temperature limits. When the outdoor temperature is below -5℃ to 0℃, the heating efficiency of conventional heat pumps will decrease significantly, or even shut down for protection, and they will be unable to provide normal heating. Models without low-temperature enthalpy enhancement function will basically lose their heating capacity in extremely cold weather.
2. Poor room airtightness and overload : Leaky doors and windows, poor wall insulation, and the rate of heat loss in the room is greater than the rate of air conditioning heating, so it does not feel warm at all; at the same time, the room area exceeds the range of air conditioner capacity, and the equipment cannot achieve the heating effect even when running at full load.
3. Abnormal control of individual units in multi-split central air conditioning systems: If the main control panel of a multi-split central air conditioning system is not turned on for heating, or if the valves of individual indoor units are closed or there is poor wiring contact, the whole house or a single room may not receive heating.
