Advantages of Rooftop Package Unit compared to traditional air conditioners

The core advantages of Rooftop Package Unit (RTUs, rooftop direct expansion units) compared to traditional air conditioning units (water-cooled units, multi-split units, split cabinet units) are : rooftop units are all-in-one air conditioning units , with the compressor, condenser, evaporator, fan, filter, and fresh air section all integrated into a rainproof shell. They are placed on the roof and only require connection to ductwork and electricity. There is no need for a machine room, cooling tower, long copper refrigerant pipes, or indoor water pipes .

1. Saves indoor space, eliminating the need for a dedicated air conditioning room.

Water-cooled units : require a separate machine room, occupying business/production area and incurring high rental costs; Multi-split units : indoor units are concealed in the ceiling, with a large number of copper pipes running through the ceiling; Rooftop Package Unit : the entire unit is placed on the roof, with only air ducts running indoors, not occupying usable indoor space, making them very popular in shopping malls, factories, supermarkets, and warehouses.

2. Simple installation, short construction period, factory pre-installed and debugged.

The refrigerant is pre-charged at the factory and the whole unit is tested. On-site, only the air ducts and power supply need to be connected. Water-cooled systems require cooling towers, water pumps, water pipes, valves, and water treatment. Multi-split systems require a large number of refrigerant copper pipes and pressure testing for leaks. Rooftop units have fewer construction steps and obvious advantages for retrofit projects.

3. Features built-in fresh air supply for better air quality and supports free cooling (economy model).

the biggest difference from VRF multi-split systems :

Multi-split air conditioning systems typically require a separate fresh air unit; RTUs come with a built-in fresh air valve and filter, and can be linked to CO₂ for fresh air supply; models with an economizer use outdoor fresh air for cooling when the outdoor temperature and humidity are suitable, without starting the compressor, resulting in significant energy savings (water cooling can also be done, but the system is much more complex ). They can integrate dehumidification, humidification, and medium- to high-efficiency filtration, making them suitable for cleanrooms and laboratories.

4. Maintenance does not disrupt the indoor environment; the risk of failure is concentrated on the roof.

Inspection, filter replacement, and maintenance can all be completed on the roof, without needing to enter shops, workshops, or offices; there are no refrigerant pipes or condensate pipes indoors, reducing the risk of ceiling leaks and refrigerant leaks from the source ; multiple rooftop package unit are arranged in zones, so if one unit fails, it only affects one area and will not cause the entire building to shut down (compared to a single large water-cooled main unit).

5. The system is simple, has few points of failure, and is suitable for water-scarce areas.

Air-cooled direct expansion eliminates the need for cooling water systems, cooling towers , and cooling water pumps , thus avoiding issues like scaling, corrosion, freezing, and water treatment problems associated with water systems. It is more suitable for scenarios such as water shortages, coastal areas, and chemical plants. The outdoor sheet metal is rainproof and corrosion-resistant, and it is designed for outdoor working conditions.

6. Lower indoor noise

The compressor and cooling fan are all located on the roof, so the only noise in the room is from the air ducts; unlike split cabinet units, fan coil units , and ceiling-mounted indoor units, where the noise source is inside the ceiling.

7. Flexible expansion, zone control

The units can be independently configured for different areas, allowing supermarkets to operate them separately for fresh produce, sales areas, and warehouses. For future expansion, a new rooftop package unit can be added without altering the existing main pipeline. It is suitable for large-area locations where units can be used simultaneously in the same area (supermarkets, factories, stadiums).

8. Good overall cost-effectiveness for initial investment.

Compared to a complete water-cooled unit + cooling tower + server room setup, rooftop units have lower initial investment; compared to multi-split systems for large areas, they offer stronger airflow and fresh air capacity, resulting in a more cost-effective unit cooling capacity for large-area applications.

In short

Suitable for: large spaces, spaces requiring fresh air, spaces where you don't want a machine room, spaces with water shortages, spaces where you don't want to install complex water systems, supermarkets, factories, and warehouses.

Disadvantages: Small rooms can be used independently for different time periods (such as single office rooms for overtime work), which is not as flexible as multi-split systems ; the roof needs to be load-bearing and waterproof; heating is relatively weak in long-term cold regions.
