Introduction and Features of Water-Cooled Chillers

I. What is a water-cooled chiller unit?

A water-cooled chiller is a large-scale refrigeration unit that uses water as the cooling medium and produces low-temperature chilled water through a vapor compression refrigeration cycle . It is the core unit of central air conditioning systems and industrial cooling systems, and is widely used in commercial buildings, industrial production facilities, data centers, and other places requiring centralized cooling.

Unlike air-cooled chillers that directly exhaust heat into the air, water-cooled chillers require a cooling water circulation system to transfer heat to the cooling water, which is then dissipated into the atmosphere by a cooling tower . This "water-cooled condensation" method results in a higher energy efficiency ratio and a larger unit capacity.

II. Working Principle

Water-cooled chiller units operate based on a vapor compression refrigeration cycle , which is completed by four core components: compressor, condenser, throttling device, and evaporator.

1. Compression process

The compressor draws in low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant vapor from the evaporator and compresses it into high-temperature, high-pressure superheated vapor. During this process, both the refrigerant's pressure and temperature increase significantly, creating conditions for subsequent condensation and heat release.

2. Condensation process

High-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant vapor enters the condenser (usually a shell-and-tube heat exchanger) and exchanges heat with the cooling water. After transferring heat to the cooling water, the refrigerant condenses into a high-pressure liquid. The cooling water absorbs heat, its temperature rises, and it flows to the cooling tower to dissipate heat and cool down.

3. Throttling process

When high-pressure liquid refrigerant passes through a throttling device (expansion valve or capillary tube), its pressure and temperature drop sharply, transforming it into a low-temperature, low-pressure gas-liquid two-phase mixture. The throttling process does not change the enthalpy of the refrigerant, but it achieves a cooling effect by reducing pressure.

4. Evaporation process

Low-temperature, low-pressure refrigerant enters the evaporator, absorbs heat from the chilled water, and evaporates into a low-pressure gas. The chilled water absorbs heat and its temperature decreases (usually to around 7°C). It is then pumped to air conditioning terminal equipment or industrial process cooling points, absorbs heat again, and returns to the evaporator, completing the chilled water cycle.

III. Main Features

1. High efficiency and energy saving

  • High energy efficiency ratio : The heat exchange efficiency of water-cooled condensers is much higher than that of air-cooled condensers, resulting in lower condensing temperatures, lower compressor power consumption, and a COP (coefficient of performance) that can typically reach 5.0 to 6.0 or higher, which is 30% to 50% higher than that of air-cooled condensers.
  • Low operating costs : Although the initial investment includes cooling towers and water pump systems, the long-term operating electricity costs are significantly lower than those of air-cooled units.

2. Large single-unit capacity

  • The cooling capacity of a single unit can range from tens of refrigeration tons to thousands of refrigeration tons (approximately 100kW to over 10,000kW), making it suitable for large-scale cooling demand scenarios such as large buildings, industrial parks, and data centers.
  • Multiple units operating in parallel can achieve centralized cooling on a larger scale.

3. Stable and reliable operation

  • It adopts a high-efficiency shell and tube heat exchanger, which has high heat transfer efficiency and low cooling loss.
  • Equipped with a precision temperature controller and a fully automatic control system, it can operate stably for a long time.
  • High-quality compressors (such as centrifugal and screw compressors) have low noise, low vibration, and long service life.

4. Disadvantages and limitations

  • The system is complex : it requires auxiliary equipment such as cooling towers , cooling water pumps, and cooling tower fans, and the system has more pipelines and maintenance points.
  • Large water consumption : Cooling water is lost through evaporation in the cooling tower , requiring regular water replenishment and water treatment (anti-scaling, anti-corrosion, sterilization and algae removal).
  • The installation site has high requirements : it requires a dedicated machine room and outdoor cooling tower location, and in cold regions, antifreeze measures need to be considered in winter.
  • The initial investment is relatively high : including cooling towers, water pumps, water pipes, etc., the overall initial investment is higher than that of air-cooled units .
