Introduction and Necessity of Cooling Towers in HVAC Systems

I. Introduction to Cooling Towers

A cooling tower is a heat dissipation device in a water-cooled central air conditioning system . It is not a refrigeration unit and does not produce chilled water itself; its function is to remove the condensation heat released by the chiller unit's condenser. The working medium is water, utilizing the latent heat of vaporization: high-temperature cooling water (37°C) from the chiller unit 's condenser is sent to the cooling tower and sprayed onto the packing material through a water distribution device, forming a water film. A fan drives air to fully contact the water film, and some of the water evaporates, absorbing heat and releasing it into the atmosphere. The cooled water (32°C) collects in a collection pan and is pumped back to the chiller unit's condenser, continuously circulating. The heat transfer limit is constrained by the local wet-bulb temperature , which is a fundamental boundary condition for water-cooled systems.

II. Commonly Used Cooling Tower Types for Heating:

Open counterflow cooling tower : The most widely used type, used in water cooling systems of shopping malls, office buildings, and large complexes. It has high heat exchange efficiency and high cost performance. The disadvantage is that water is in direct contact with air, which can easily accumulate dust and breed bacteria and algae, requiring regular water treatment.

Open crossflow cooling tower : side air intake, lower noise, suitable for places with high noise reduction requirements such as hotels and hospitals.

Closed-circuit cooling towers : The cooling medium flows in a closed loop within the coils, without direct contact with air. The water is clean and less prone to scaling. They are often used in clean operating rooms, data centers, and other environments with high water quality requirements, but are more expensive.

Core components: fan motor, water distributor, nozzle, packing (heat exchange core), water collector (to reduce water drift), water collection tray, water supply/drainage pipeline.

III. The Necessity of Cooling Towers in Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Systems

1. An essential heat exhaust outlet for water-cooled units

a chiller unit compresses the refrigerant, the condenser must release the heat of condensation. Without a cooling tower to continuously remove this heat, the cooling water temperature will continuously rise, causing the condensing pressure to increase. This triggers the high-pressure protection of the unit, leading to a direct shutdown and the loss of cooling capacity for the air conditioning system. Air-cooled air conditioning units rely on an outdoor heat exchanger to dissipate heat directly into the air and do not require a cooling tower; however, water-cooled screw and centrifugal chiller units must be equipped with a cooling tower to function properly .

2.Ensure unit cooling efficiency and save operating energy consumption

The lower the cooling water temperature, the higher the COP (Coefficient of Performance) of the chiller unit . A cooling tower that stably controls the cooling water at the design temperature significantly reduces the power consumption of the main unit. The performance of the cooling tower directly determines the energy consumption level of the entire central air conditioning system and is a key factor in energy saving in water-cooled systems.

3.Suitable for large buildings with high cooling load requirements

Hospitals, large shopping malls, industrial parks, and convention centers have huge cooling loads, but air-cooled units have limited heat dissipation capacity, large footprint, and high noise levels. Water-cooled chiller units combined with cooling towers offer large single-unit cooling capacity and are the mainstream choice for HVAC solutions in large buildings.

4.Recycle water to reduce water consumption

The cooling water is in a closed loop, with only minor losses due to evaporation and water drift, requiring only a small amount of continuous water replenishment. If the cooling tower is eliminated and direct-flow water cooling is used, tap water needs to be continuously drawn and hot water is discharged directly, resulting in huge water consumption and failing to meet water conservation and environmental emission requirements.

5.Stabilize system operating conditions and extend host lifespan

Prolonged exposure to excessively high condensing temperatures can lead to overload of the compressor, deterioration of the lubricating oil, and accelerated wear of the main unit. A cooling tower provides continuous and stable heat dissipation, keeping the main unit operating at its design specifications, reducing malfunctions, and extending the lifespan of the chiller unit.
