How to choose an air source heat pump air conditioner for a villa

A comprehensive guide to selecting air source heat pumps for villas (primarily dual-supply systems) : For villas, prioritize ultra-low temperature inverter dual-supply systems (skylight and floor heating) , integrating cooling and heating with a fan coil unit for both cooling and floor heating. Ordinary residential triple-supply systems are not recommended due to their complexity, high failure rate, and short lifespan. Using a separate air source heat pump water heater for hot water is more reliable. Core principle: Equipment accounts for 30%, design and construction 70% . Villas often have multi-story buildings, uneven loads, and low simultaneous operation rates; focusing solely on horsepower can easily lead to problems.

I. determine the system type

1. Combined air and ground water supply (standard dual-supply system, recommended)

The main unit produces chilled/hot water, with fan coil cooling in summer and underfloor heating in winter; the water system provides gentle, non-drying airflow, and the underfloor heating is energy-efficient, making it suitable for long-term owner-occupancy, the elderly, and children.

2. Natural fluoride and groundwater

The outdoor unit uses a refrigerant system, the indoor unit uses a refrigerant fan coil unit for cooling, and there is a separate water circuit for underfloor heating. It cools quickly and has a slightly lower risk of leaks, but the upper limit of the water temperature on the underfloor heating side is low, and the low-temperature heating is not as stable as that of a dual-supply system with pure water. It is suitable for families who frequently use air conditioning intermittently.

3. Tri-generation system (heating and cooling + domestic hot water)

This is not recommended as the primary solution for villas. It requires continuous operation year-round, frequent mode switching, and has a high rate of limescale buildup and heat exchanger failures. Hot and cold water systems compete for load, leading to conflicts between heating and hot water in winter, and causing maintenance problems later on. For large villas, a separate air-source heat pump water heater is more convenient and worry-free.

4. Single warm-up unit

If you already have central air conditioning and only need to use it for underfloor heating/radiators in winter, this is an option for those with a low budget and weak heating demand in the south.

II. Core Indicators for Main Unit Selection

1. Low-temperature heating capacity > nominal heating capacity (most important)

Don't just look at the heating capacity indicated on the nameplate; look at the heating capacity under the -12℃ operating condition. This is the true output under winter cold waves. Reject models that rely on high-power electric auxiliary heating (electricity bills skyrocket when the electric auxiliary heating is turned on).

2. Energy efficiency IPLV (H), APF

Prioritize Level 1 energy efficiency; the higher the APF (Advanced Performance Factor), the more energy-saving it is. For villas operating long-term, APF is more valuable than short-term COP (Coefficient of Performance).

3. Variable frequency wide adjustment range

Villas often have many rooms, and only a portion of them are frequently open. Wideband inverters (3~100Hz) can operate stably under low loads, avoiding frequent starts and stops, high noise, and high power consumption.

4. Single unit or multiple units in parallel?

For areas under 200㎡: a single main unit (16~24kW) is sufficient; for areas over 250㎡, multi-story buildings, basements, and areas with average insulation: two small units connected in parallel (modular units). Advantages: more energy-efficient under partial load, one unit can be used as an emergency backup if one fails, and lower noise per unit.

It is not recommended to use a single ultra-large main unit (above 30kW), as it is inefficient and noisy at low loads.

5. Water pump type

Built-in pump: Convenient, suitable for short pipelines and low resistance; External pump: Priority choice for large villas, long pipelines, and secondary systems, with better noise reduction, hydraulic balance, and convenient independent pump maintenance.

III. How to calculate the load (for villas, it is not possible to simply estimate based on area)

The load is determined by four factors: building area, floor height, exterior wall/door and window insulation, whether it is a top floor/basement, and the simultaneous opening rate (not all rooms will be fully opened at the same time).

For villas, the main unit selection should be based on heat load (heating is a weak point in winter), and then the cooling load should be checked. The indoor unit fan coil should be matched according to the full load of the room, and the main unit should be discounted according to the same operating rate. Water-cooled machines do not have the same over-matching logic as refrigerant machines. Many vendors randomly match the main unit here, either using an undersized engine for a large load or using an oversized main unit for inefficient operation.

For example: A 300㎡ villa with normal insulation, a simultaneous operation rate of 60%, and a heat load of 120W/㎡. The total heat load = 300×120=36kW. The main unit is approximately 21.6kW when operating at 60% capacity. A 24kW ultra-low temperature inverter main unit can be selected, or two 12kW units can be connected in parallel.

IV. End-of-line matching scheme

1. Summer cooling: Fan coil units

Prioritize quiet operation models with condensate lift pumps (for villas with deep ceilings and difficult drainage, preventing leaks and ceiling damage); each room has independent temperature control, electric two-way valves, and hydraulic balance.

2. Winter heating: primarily underfloor heating

Underfloor heating has a low water temperature (35~40℃), which is a perfect match for air source heat pumps, resulting in the highest COP. In basements, high-ceilinged halls, and poorly insulated areas, underfloor heating can be supplemented with radiators. Radiators provide water temperatures of 45~50℃, allowing for faster heating.

It is not recommended to use radiators for all heating. The high water temperature of radiators significantly reduces the energy efficiency of heat pumps, resulting in higher electricity bills.

V. Installation, server room, noise reduction, and freeze protection (High-frequency pitfalls encountered in villas)

1. Host Location

Keep away from bedrooms and tea rooms; provide ample space for maintenance and ensure good ventilation; avoid enclosing in small, enclosed rooms in courtyards, as this leads to poor heat dissipation in summer and severe frost buildup in winter; install shock-absorbing bases and flexible joints to reduce low-frequency noise.

2. System water capacity + buffer tank

Large-scale systems in villas must be equipped with buffer water tanks to stabilize water temperature, reduce frequent start-stop of the main unit, and ensure smoother defrosting; small-capacity primary systems may not require buffer tanks, but secondary systems are recommended to have them as standard equipment.

3. Antifreeze plan

Automatic antifreeze, electric heat tracing, and the addition of special antifreeze; the antifreeze protection logic in case of power failure must be written into the contract; special protection should be given to pipelines in basements and open areas.

4. Hydraulic balance

Multi-story villas must be equipped with manifolds, electric valves, and differential pressure bypasses; otherwise, some rooms will be very hot while others will not.

5. Power distribution

High-power main unit requires a separate circuit and a dedicated 4 sq mm/6 sq mm line; for two units connected in parallel, the total current must be calculated, and for old power grids in self-built houses, the transformer capacity must be confirmed in advance.
