Does the length of copper pipes affect the cooling effect of an air conditioner?

The length of copper pipes affects the cooling effect of air conditioners.

Core principle : Air conditioning copper pipes (refrigerant pipes) are the channels for refrigerant circulation. The length, height difference, and pipe diameter together determine the refrigerant pressure drop. The longer the pipe, the greater the refrigerant pressure loss, which directly affects the cooling capacity, oil return, and compressor operating status.

I. What problems might occur if the copper pipe is too long?

Reduced cooling capacity . Refrigerant faces frictional resistance in long pipelines, leading to lower pressure, insufficient refrigerant flow on the evaporator side, reduced heat exchange, and slower indoor cooling. Compressor oil return is difficult (the most critical risk) . Refrigeration oil circulates with the refrigerant in the pipeline. If the pipeline is too long, oil tends to accumulate at the bottom of the copper pipes and cannot return to the compressor. This can result in insufficient compressor lubrication, increased noise, and higher power consumption; in severe cases, compressor wear and burnout due to insufficient oil. Increased refrigerant charge is necessary. Lengthening the copper pipes increases their volume, requiring additional refrigerant. Without added refrigerant, the system will have insufficient refrigerant, resulting in poor cooling. It's not a matter of adding refrigerant arbitrarily just because the pipes are longer; the amount added must be precisely measured according to the pipe length . Even with insulation on the low-pressure side copper pipes , the longer the pipeline, the more heat the refrigerant absorbs from the environment, leading to premature cooling loss.

II . The impact of copper pipes being too short (less common)

Insufficient piping length and inadequate system buffer space can easily lead to liquid slugging: liquid refrigerant can directly flow back into the compressor, damaging valve plates; pressure fluctuations can be large, resulting in unstable operation. Manufacturers typically specify a minimum piping length (3-5 meters for most household units).

III . Industry-standard limits (for residential multi-split air conditioners/wall-mounted and floor-standing units)

Different brands may have different sample parameters; please refer to the model nameplate and instruction manual for the most accurate information .

Split wall-mounted and cabinet air conditioners: standard piping length is 3 meters, and the maximum pipe length is generally 10~15m . Exceeding this length will result in a significant decrease in cooling capacity and will also limit the height difference between the indoor and outdoor units .

Residential VRF multi-split air conditioner : The maximum pipe length of a single indoor unit can reach tens of meters , but for each additional section, the cooling capacity must be reduced according to the manufacturer's parameters , and the height difference must be limited.

IV . Besides length, these two points are equally important.

Elevation difference between indoor and outdoor units : It's fine if the outdoor unit is lower than the indoor unit; however, if the outdoor unit is much higher than the indoor unit, the difficulty of oil return increases significantly, and the risk doubles with long pipelines .

Insulation : Extended copper pipes must be completely wrapped with thick insulation cotton. If the insulation is damaged, the cold loss of long pipes will increase dramatically.

Brief summary

Within the manufacturer's permitted piping length: adding a small amount of piping, replenishing the refrigerant, and ensuring proper insulation will have minimal impact on refrigeration; exceeding the manufacturer's maximum piping length will result in reduced cooling capacity, increased power consumption, a greater risk of compressor oil return, and in severe cases, compressor burnout .
