Common Applications and Precautions for VRF Systems
VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow) multi-split systems are widely used in various building types due to their flexible layout, high precision of zoned control, and lack of need for a central equipment room. The following is a systematic overview from two perspectives: applicable locations and key considerations .
I. Common Applications of VRF Systems
Building type | Typical application scenarios | Advantages of selection |
office buildings | Small and medium-sized office buildings, corporate headquarters, co-working spaces | Zoned metering, independent switches, flexible design to match interior decoration |
Commercial retail | Chain stores, brand counters, community shopping malls, convenience stores | Flexible start-stop and high efficiency under partial load |
Hotels and guesthouses | Boutique hotels, serviced apartments, guesthouses, long-term rental apartments | Individual temperature control in guest rooms; automatic energy saving when no guests are present. |
Medical Clinic | Community clinics, outpatient buildings, dental/cosmetic surgery institutions | Stable temperature and humidity, independent ventilation, and low noise. |
Education and training institutions | School classrooms, after-school training institutions, study rooms | Concentrated usage time and zoned control save power. |
Residential villas | Large single-level apartments, duplexes, villas | Indoor units come in various forms (ducted/wall-mounted/recessed) to match different interior design styles. |
Old building renovation | Installing air conditioning in existing buildings to replace old-fashioned split-type air conditioners | No need for large wells, short construction period, and no need for machine room |
Industrial Support | Factory office building, control room, laboratory auxiliary rooms | Independent of process air conditioning, simplifying operation and maintenance. |
II. Key Precautions
1. Design Phase
Accurate calculation of cooling load : The energy efficiency of VRF system is optimal in the partial load range. Avoid excessive installed capacity during design (excessive capacity will reduce the energy efficiency ratio).
Pipe length verification : The maximum height difference between indoor and outdoor units is generally ≤ 50 m (varies by brand); the total length of a single pipe is usually ≤ 100–150 m; the equivalent length from the farthest indoor unit to the outdoor unit must be controlled within the manufacturer's allowable range.
Refrigerant pipe specifications : Select the gas/liquid pipe diameter according to the actual pipe length and capacity ratio, and do not blindly copy the nominal value of the sample.
Indoor and outdoor unit capacity ratio : Generally, the ratio of total indoor unit capacity to outdoor unit capacity is 50% to 130%. If it exceeds 100%, attention should be paid to the simultaneous usage rate.
2. Installation and Construction
Copper pipe installation : Welding must be protected with nitrogen to prevent oxide scale from entering the system; the insulation cotton must be continuous without breaks to prevent condensation and dripping.
Vacuuming and pressure holding : The system can maintain a pressure of 4.0 MPa or higher for 24 hours without pressure drop; vacuum to -0.1 MPa and maintain it for more than 2 hours.
Condensate drainage : The slope of the drain pipe must be ≥ 1%, and a full water test and a water flow test must be performed.
Outdoor unit location : well-ventilated, avoiding hot air short circuits; with sufficient space for maintenance around it; noise reduction measures are required if it is near a noise-sensitive area.
3. Operation and Maintenance
Regular maintenance : Clean the filter every 2–4 weeks and the heat exchanger once a year.
Refrigerant Leak Detection : VRF systems require a large amount of refrigerant, and leaks not only affect performance but also pose safety and environmental risks. It is recommended to check for leaks annually.
Control strategy : Combine human body sensing, timed on/off switching, and centralized monitoring system to reduce idle energy consumption.
Fresh air system integration : The VRF system itself only handles recirculated air, so a separate fresh air system ( such as a total heat exchanger) must be set up, otherwise the indoor air quality will be poor and energy consumption will increase.
