What are the different types of air conditioners?

Air conditioners can be classified in many ways, from their purpose, structure, and refrigeration principle, among other things. Below, we'll break it down according to the most common dimensions.

Classified by use

Residential air conditioners : These are designed for ordinary households and typically have a cooling capacity of 2.5 to 7 kW. Common types include wall-mounted units, floor-standing units, and residential central air conditioning systems (multi-split systems).

Commercial air conditioning : used in office buildings, shopping malls, hotels, etc., with a larger cooling capacity. Common forms include ducted air conditioners, multi-split systems, and chiller units.

Industrial air conditioners are used in factory workshops, data centers, laboratories, etc., and often have special requirements for temperature and humidity accuracy, cleanliness, and reliability.

Specialized air conditioning : such as computer room air conditioning, constant temperature and humidity air conditioning, explosion-proof air conditioning, vehicle air conditioning, marine air conditioning, etc.

Classified by structural form

Window air conditioner : an integrated unit installed in a window or wall opening. It is inexpensive and easy to install, but it is noisy and is now rarely seen in homes.

Split-type air conditioners : The indoor and outdoor units are separate and connected by copper pipes. The most common types are wall -mounted and floor-standing .

Portable air conditioner : An all-in-one unit with wheels for easy movement, requiring no installation, but with lower cooling efficiency and the need for exhaust ducts.

Central air conditioning : One outdoor unit connects to multiple indoor units, or is centrally cooled by a chiller unit. Commonly found in large apartments, villas, and commercial buildings.

Multi-split system (VRV/VRF) : A type of central air conditioning system where one outdoor unit is connected to multiple indoor units via refrigerant pipes, and each room can be controlled independently.

Classified by refrigeration principle

Compressor-type air conditioners : These are the most common type, relying on a compressor to drive the refrigerant circulation to achieve cooling and heating. Almost all household air conditioners belong to this category.

Absorption air conditioning : driven by a heat source (such as gas, steam, or hot water) rather than an electric compressor, it is often used in industrial settings or large commercial buildings where waste heat can be utilized.

Adsorption air conditioners : These air conditioners use a cycle of adsorption/desorption of refrigerant by a solid adsorbent to provide cooling, and are often used in special applications.

Semiconductor refrigeration : Utilizes the Peltier effect, without compressors or refrigerants, but with low efficiency, it is mostly used in small water dispensers, car refrigerators, etc.

Classified by function

Cooling-only type : It can only cool and cannot heat. It is more common in southern regions or in situations where it is mainly used in summer.

Cooling and heating type : It can both cool and heat, which is achieved by switching the refrigerant flow through a four-way valve.

Temperature and humidity constant type : It can not only control the temperature, but also precisely control the humidity, and is used in laboratories, archives, data centers, etc.

Purification type : In addition to cooling, it adds functions such as filtration, sterilization, and fresh air, such as air conditioners with HEPA filters and ultraviolet sterilization.

Classified by cooling method

Air-cooled : The condenser is cooled by air, so there is no need for a cooling tower. It is flexible in installation and is mostly used in residential and small-to-medium-sized commercial applications.

Water-cooled type : The condenser is cooled by water, requiring a cooling tower. It is highly efficient and commonly used in large central air conditioning systems.

Evaporative cooling : This type of cooling system uses the heat absorbed by water evaporation to cool the condenser. It is between air cooling and water cooling and is suitable for dry areas.

Classified by air supply method

Direct airflow type : such as wall-mounted units and floor-standing units, where cold air is blown directly into the room.

Duct type : Cool air is delivered to each room through ducts, and the indoor unit is hidden in the ceiling. It is aesthetically pleasing but requires ceiling space.

Radiant type : Cooling and heating are provided through radiation from the floor, walls or ceiling, providing high comfort. It is commonly found in high-end residential buildings and some commercial buildings.
