The difference between VRF and VRV

The difference between VRF and VRV

Key conclusions: VRF and VRV are essentially the same central air conditioning technology (variable refrigerant flow multi-split system). Their core principles, system structures, and operating logic are completely identical, with no fundamental technical differences. The core differences between the two lie only in name ownership, industry terminology, and specific technological iterations, making them the most easily confused concepts of the same name but different labels in the HVAC industry.

I. Basic Definitions and Differences in Ownership (The Most Core Difference)

1. VRV (Variable Refrigerant Volume)

stands for Variable Refrigerant Volume, a registered trademark of Daikin Air Conditioning and a proprietary brand term. Daikin pioneered the development of the Variable Refrigerant Flow Multi-Split System in 1982, and was the first to use the VRV name, making it the founding name for this technology. Simply put, VRV is not a generic technical term; it's a Daikin-specific product identifier used only for Daikin's multi-split central air conditioning products.

2. VRF (Variable Refrigerant Flow)

VRF stands for Variable Refrigerant Flow, a globally recognized industry standard technical term without brand exclusivity. Following the release and widespread adoption of Daikin's VRV patent technology, the entire HVAC industry has adopted VRF as the common name for this type of multi-split system. All brands (Gree, Midea, Hitachi, York, etc.) of multi-split central air conditioning systems are uniformly classified as VRF systems.

II. Subtle differences in the technical meaning of the names (literal meaning versus iteration)

The subtle differences in their English definitions correspond to minor iterations in early technologies and are also a secondary basis for industry differentiation:

  • VRV (Volume) : An early term for the first-generation technology, focusing on describing the refrigerant volume adjustment logic of the compressor cylinder . Its core feature is to adapt to changes in air conditioning load by changing the working volume of the compressor, which is the core characteristic of the first-generation variable flow technology.
  • VRF (Flow) : A generalized name after iteration, focusing on describing the overall refrigerant flow regulation of the system . It not only includes compressor volume regulation, but also integrates a complete set of regulation logic such as electronic expansion valve, frequency converter control, and pipeline flow self-adaptation, making the definition more comprehensive and in line with modern multi-split system technology.

The current generation of Daikin VRV products is also fully in line with the VRF universal standard in terms of technical logic, and the technical differences between the two have been completely eliminated.

III. Clarification of Common Misconceptions

1. There is no inherent superiority or inferiority between the two technologies : VRV is not more advanced than VRF; they are simply different names. Daikin's latest VRV 5 and VRV X7 series are essentially high-end VRF systems.

2. The system functions are completely identical : both are "one outdoor unit drives multiple indoor units", supporting independent temperature control in different zones, frequency conversion energy saving, and on-demand adjustment of refrigerant flow, suitable for residential villas, office buildings, shopping malls and other scenarios.

3. Bidding and Engineering Applications : VRF is used as the standard term in HVAC engineering, tender documents, and specifications. VRV is only used as a common name for Daikin products.

In short : VRF is the general term for multi-split central air conditioning, while VRV is the exclusive product name for Daikin's multi-split systems. They are of the same origin and have the same technology, differing only in naming rights and usage scenarios.
