Introduction to Air-Cooled Modular Chillers and Their Advantages

I. What is an air-cooled modular chiller unit?

Air-cooled modular chiller is a modular central air conditioning unit that uses air as the cooling medium and water as the heat transfer medium. It is also an integrated refrigeration equipment commonly used in commercial and industrial settings. Some models also have heating functions and are also known as air-cooled heat pump modular units.

Its name can be broken down into two core features: First, it is air-cooled , unlike water-cooled units, it does not require a cooling tower or cooling water circulation system. It relies on an outdoor fan to drive air through the condenser to remove the heat from the refrigeration system, completely eliminating the dependence on water sources; Second, it is modular , the whole unit is composed of multiple independent small refrigeration module units, each module is equipped with independent compressors, heat exchangers, expansion valves and other core components, which can operate independently without interfering with each other, and can be freely combined and matched according to needs.

Its working principle is simple and stable: through a closed-loop refrigerant cycle, it absorbs heat from chilled water in the evaporator to produce low-temperature chilled water, meeting the cooling needs of indoor air conditioning or equipment. The heat is then dissipated to the outdoor air through the condenser, completing the full refrigeration cycle. The mainstream specifications on the market are 65kW and 130kW, which can be flexibly combined to adapt to different cooling load scenarios.

II.Core advantages of air-cooled modular chiller units

of the need for a cooling water system
eliminates the need for cooling towers, cooling water pumps, cooling water pipelines, and corresponding antifreeze measures. Therefore, the initial investment is lower, the installation is simple, and there are no problems such as water drift, noise, or Legionella growth associated with cooling towers.

The modular design
allows for flexible expansion by combining multiple modules with the same or different cooling capacities (such as basic modules like 65kW and 130kW). When the building's cooling load increases later, modules can be easily added without affecting the operation of the original system.

Energy-efficient and high-performance
units utilize high-efficiency heat exchangers, with some models featuring DC inverter technology and intelligent control systems, achieving an energy efficiency ratio that meets the national first-class energy efficiency standard. Heat pump units can also reuse the condensation heat generated during operation through heat recovery technology, thereby improving energy utilization.

High degree of automation and stable and reliable operation.
The modular design allows each refrigeration system to operate independently, and the failure of some modules does not affect the overall operation. It is equipped with multiple protection devices such as temperature protection, overload relay, and high and low pressure safety switches to ensure safe operation. Some models adopt jet enthalpy enhancement technology, which can stably heat in low temperature environments of around -30℃.

Flexible installation location and space-saving:
The unit is usually placed on the roof, ground or equipment platform, without the need for a dedicated refrigeration room, saving indoor space in the building.

It is easy to maintain and has good fault tolerance.
When a single module fails, the other modules can continue to operate without affecting the cooling of the entire system. During maintenance, the faulty module can be isolated to achieve maintenance without stopping the system.

Suitable for winter heating,
it can be switched to heat pump mode by switching the four-way valve to absorb heat from the air to produce hot water (generally 40-45℃), which can be used for underfloor heating and fan coil heating, especially suitable for areas with hot summers and cold winters without centralized heating.

III.Applicable scenarios:

Air-cooled modular chillers are used in medium-sized buildings that require independent air conditioning systems, such as office buildings, shopping malls, hospitals, hotels, villas, and factory workshops, especially in projects where space is limited and cooling towers or boilers cannot be installed.
